Kentucky Fried Chicken’s History
Everyone knows that the KFC secret recipe was invented by Colonel Sanders. However, did you know that he was a real man by the name of Harland Sanders born in 1890 in Henryville, Indiana? He was running a gas station in Kentucky where he served up his fried chicken and 1935 his chicken was so well known that Kentucky Governor Ruby Laffoon named him a colonel.
Changes to the traffic pattern around his restaurant forced Colonel Sanders to close the original restaurant and he focused on creating a franchise. By 1964 there were over 600 KFC franchised restaurants and he sold his remaining interest in the company for $2 million.
In 1966 KFC went public, and in 1969 was listed on NYSE. As of 2015 there are 18,000 KFCs in over 115 countries worldwide.
